Mississauga pushes for changes to Ontario Building Code

During a recent city council meeting, motion was introduced asking the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, to make amendments to the Ontario Building Code to allow city officials to inspect homes suspected of containing multiple illegal units.

As the pandemic takes a grip and rentals in GTA trend higher, the cities feel that house owners might be converting single family homes and renting it out to multiple families. The cities are asking for permission for city officials to be able to go in and  perform inspections.

According to the motion, it is understood that Mississauga's building staff have received numerous complaints about single-family homes being converted into multi-unit dwellings without the appropriate permits. The city officials currently have difficulty obtaining access to the units to inspect them.
